Safe Children's Network

Safe Children's Network was originally a chapter of Safe Kids Pennsylvania and Safe Kids USA and was formed in 1995. In 2011, it became a committee of the Children’s Advisory Commission of Indiana County.

Injuries are the second leading cause of hospitalization and the leading cause of emergency room visits among children under 14.

The leading causes of death in children from accidental injury are:

  • Motor vehicle occupant injury

  • Airway obstruction, drowning

  • Pedestrian injury

  • Burns

As many as 90 percent of accidental injuries can be prevented. There is no one device or solution to effectively prevent all types of accidental childhood injuries. Instead, the Safe Children’s Network provide education and programs to reduce injuries and our goals are to:

  • EDUCATE adults and children

  • Create safe ENVIRONMENTS

  • Conduct RESEARCH

To accomplish this, we sponsor and/or promote:

  • Child passenger safety seat checkpoints, car seat distribution, and car seat education

  • Bicycle safety rodeos and distribution of bicycle helmets

  • Games and displays at health fairs, school open houses, and other events

  • Safety presentations

  • Information via public service announcements to local newspapers and radio stations

The chapter meets regularly on the 4th Monday of every month at 8:30 a.m.

Community members meet to design programs to reduce the incidence of childhood injuries that are specific to Indiana County.
